Late in the summer of 2012, beekeepers in the northeast of France began to notice the honey produced by their bees were mysteriously appearing in shades of green and blue. The blue and green honey was becoming commonplace around the town of Ribeauville and the beekeepers were forced to investigate and what they found astounded these apiarist's... M&M's. Yes, the candy! Turns out the biogas plant 2.5 miles away was processing waste from a M&M production plant and the bees throughout the area were traveling to the holding area to feast on sweet M&M's (Daily News).
The issue was resolved with more effective indoor storage but this colorful story helps illustrate how we all need to be aware of what we eat and when possible what our food consumes as well. If the little but important honey bee is visibly affected by its diet, how can we presume our bodies are not? But that is not the end of the bee story. Honey bee population globally has been dying off for years. There is still constant speculation why the mass deaths are occurring but the fact remains bees populations are shrinking. Agriculture depends heavily on bee pollination but the farms have increased the use of pesticides on crops. And as the above story illustrates, the bees are not contained to just crops. Research continues to show a direct correlation between pesticide increase and bee population decreases. It may only be one factor to the population decrease but does it make you want to put food sprayed with pesticides in your body? If nothing else it may make you think twice.
Last post we talked about clean foods and how just knowing what to look for and a little vigilance can make a difference. The task may seem overwhelming but just take it one piece at a time. I promise it will get more intuitive over time.
Throughout our lives we will eat the wrong food, drink the wrong drink, take the medication we know we shouldn’t take and live in the wrong areas. But the sun will still rise in the east and set in the west and life goes on. We cannot be perfect. Nor can we control the outside world or avoid every potential harmful element we are bound to encounter. Life is too short to live in fear of everything outside your control but through knowledge, education and a little change we can live a healthy, fulfilling, and inspired life.
